History

The Area Study Centre for Africa, North and South America was established under the 1975 Area Study Centres Act No. XLV of the Government of Pakistan. The Centre is an autonomous institution, funded by the Ministry of Education through the Higher Education Commission. It is academically part of Quaid-i-Azam University, affiliated with its Faculty of Social Sciences. The Centre conducts the following activities:

  • M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in American Studies;
  • Arranges seminars, conferences, symposia etc in American and African Studies;
  • Co-operates in interdisciplinary relationship with other teaching and research institutons; and
  • Conducts research in the fields of American, Latin American, Canadian and African Studies.

The Centre has published Pakistan Journal of American Studies since 1983, offered Ph.D. and M. Phil. programmes in American Studies since 1980, organized conferences on American Studies, numerous seminars and symposia on American and African Studies, published a number of monograms, undertaken research projects and obtained sponsorship for students/faculty to attend international programmes.
